How to Form Negative Sentences

1. Negative Sentences in Present Simple Tense

In the present simple tense, we use do not (don’t) or does not (doesn’t) before the main verb. Examples:

  • "I do not like tea." (Positive: "I like tea.")
  • "She does not play football." (Positive: "She plays football.")

2. Negative Sentences in Past Simple Tense

In the past simple tense, we use did not (didn't) before the main verb. Examples:

3. Negative Sentences in Future Tense

In the future tense, we use will not (won't) before the verb. Examples:

4. Negative Sentences with Modal Verbs

Modal verbs (can, must, may, should, etc.) form negatives by adding not after them. Examples:

  • "You cannot swim here." (Positive: "You can swim here.")
  • "He should not be late." (Positive: "He should be late.")

5. Negative Sentences with "Be" Verbs (is, am, are, was, were)

For sentences with "be" verbs, we add not after the verb. Examples:

  • "She is not happy." (Positive: "She is happy.")
  • "They were not at home." (Positive: "They were at home.")

Other Forms of Negative Sentences

1. Negative Sentences with "No"

Instead of "not," some sentences use "no" to make them negative. Examples:

  • "There is no milk in the fridge."
  • "He has no friends."

2. Negative Sentences with "Nobody, Nothing, None, Never"

These words also make sentences negative. Examples:

  • "Nobody likes lies."
  • "She has nothing in her bag."
  • "He never eats junk food."

Anandvardhana was a Kashmiri court poet and literary critic, honored with the title of Rajanak during King Avantivarman's reign.  Anandavardhana authored the Dhvanyāloka , or A Light on Suggestion (dhwani), a work articulating the philosophy of "aesthetic suggestion" (dhwani, vyañjanā).
