  3. Tone: Tone shows emotion. It can be serious, polite, funny, or friendly. A business letter has a polite tone. A text message has a casual tone.

  4. Figures of Speech: Writers use metaphors and idioms to make writing interesting. Literature has many metaphors. Science writing does not use them.

  5. Voice: Voice means the point of view. "I think" is first-person. "You should" is second-person. "The study shows" is third-person. Writers choose different voices for different styles.

Why Style Changes

  1. Social Role: People change their style based on their role. A teacher speaks formally in class. The same teacher speaks casually with friends.

  2. Audience: People change their style for different people. A speech for students is different from a speech for children.

  3. Purpose: The goal of speaking or writing changes style. A speech to convince people is serious. A blog post is friendly.

  4. Type of Writing: Different kinds of writing have different styles. A legal document is formal. A casual talk is informal.

Anandvardhana was a Kashmiri court poet and literary critic, honored with the title of Rajanak during King Avantivarman's reign.  Anandavardhana authored the Dhvanyฤloka , or A Light on Suggestion (dhwani), a work articulating the philosophy of "aesthetic suggestion" (dhwani, vyaรฑjanฤ).
