Allegory is a literary device that conveys a deeper meaning through symbolic characters, events, or settings. It is used to express moral, political, or philosophical ideas in an indirect manner. Writers use allegory to communicate complex messages in a simple and engaging way.

One of the most famous allegorical works is The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. This story represents the journey of a man who faces struggles and temptations on his way to spiritual salvation. Each character and event in the story symbolises different aspects of human life. Similarly, George Orwell’s Animal Farm is an allegory of political corruption and the misuse of power. The animals in the story represent different sections of society, and their struggles mirror real-world political events.

In Indian literature, allegory plays an important role. The Bhagavad Gita can be seen as an allegory of human struggle and duty. The battlefield in the story symbolises life, and the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna represents the choices and responsibilities people face. Likewise, Panchtantra stories use animal characters to teach moral lessons through allegory. These stories entertain readers while conveying deeper wisdom about life and human nature.

Allegory is also found in Indian art and culture. Traditional dance forms like Kathakali and Bharatanatyam use symbolic expressions to narrate stories. The temples of India have sculptures that depict mythological tales with hidden meanings. These artistic representations are not just decorative but also convey philosophical and moral ideas.

Allegory remains relevant in modern times. Writers, filmmakers, and artists use it to highlight social issues. Movies like Oh My God and PK use allegory to question blind faith and promote rational thinking. Such works encourage people to reflect on important issues while enjoying the story.

Allegory is a powerful way to convey messages without directly stating them. It allows writers and artists to express their thoughts in a creative and thought-provoking manner. Whether in literature, art, or cinema, allegory continues to shape the way people understand the world around them.

Dhwani Theory by Anandvardhana: an introduction

Anandvardhana was a Kashmiri court poet and literary critic, honored with the title of Rajanak during King Avantivarman's reign.  Anandavardhana authored the Dhvanyāloka , or A Light on Suggestion (dhwani), a work articulating the philosophy of "aesthetic suggestion" (dhwani, vyañjanā). Anandavardhana is credited with creating the dhwani theory.
